The allowance management in the EU Emissions Trading System

Operators in the EU have a registry account for their plant in the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), where EU emission allowances (EUA) are managed. This is done by the EU and by authorised representatives appointed by the operator, who can or must carry out various transactions over a year.

These are the monitoring of free EU allowances, the submission of allowances to the EU and the transfer of incoming and outgoing allowances (buying/selling) in the registry account.

Each of these three areas requires special attention by the operator and his representatives in order to avoid serious economic disadvantages, i.e. to obtain optimal and as far as possible sufficient free allocations and, above all, to avoid mistakes in the submission, which would otherwise result in a fine of 100 euros per tonne of CO2.
